Marley Coffee UK and Future Baristas Stir It Up at Puma Yard

As big crowds have watched the Team GB and Jamaican gold rushes on the Puma Yard big screen, Marley Coffee UK and Future Baristas have been producing cups of black gold. The 19 day pop up at Puma Yard has seen the Future Barista Programme engaging local young people in the coffee industry through training sessions, volunteering and paid work.

Founded by Bob Marley’s son, Rohan, 10% of profits from Marley Coffee UK go to the Kicks For Cause Foundation in Jamaica. Over this side of the Atlantic Marley Coffee UK’s work with the Future Barista Programme is aimed at encouraging local young people to access careers in the UK’s booming coffee industry.

Future Barista Programme Manager Andy Gold said “Despite the fact that the UK coffee shop industry is now a £5billion industry of 14000 shops, too few local young people are getting a foothold in entry level barista jobs. Our work is about giving young people the skills and confidence to access comparatively well paid barista jobs and to understand how that can be a stepping stone to a variety of well paid careers such as in Management, Barista Training or even Machine Engineering.”

Future Barista Training Director Miranda La Crette said “It’s been great delivering training sessions at the Puma Yard and seeing how our future baristas have been energized by the environment. It’s provided a great context for showing how dynamic and fun starting a career in coffee can be if you master the skills you need to succeed.”

Ojay, 21 who has been working for Marley Coffee UK at the Yard after completing training and trialing sessions said. “I’ve learnt a lot being here. I’d done some volunteering before where I’d had a taste of working with coffee but now after my time here, earning, learning and getting to be a part of this amazing event, I’m really excited about where this can lead.”

Response from Brick Lane’s coffee drinkers has also been positive.

Nicola from Glasgow, in town working on the Olympics said: “When I explained the kind of coffees I like I was confidently recommended a dark roast filter coffee called Buffalo Soldier, by a young man I found out later was just on his first day as a volunteer! I’ve been coming back for my straight black everyday.”

David from Cape Town said “Been taking a break from my work everyday for a Marley Mocha and to soak up the atmosphere in the Yard. Coffee and service has been fantastic.”

Although everyone’s individual story is different, the majority of those young people engaged by the Future Barista Programme are ex-offenders or have had experience of care or homelessness and are taking the steps to make the transition to successful independent living. By the end of this pop up over a dozen young people will have received a hands on training session from leading industry trainer Miranda La Crette, 6 young people will have worked as a volunteer on the cart getting a chance to develop and prove the skills that make for success in the workplace. 4 local young people will have been engaged in paid work opportunities.
